Thyroid Diseases: Causes and Prevention

The thyroid gland, often referred to as the "thyroid," is an organ of the endocrine system that produces hormones to regulate the functioning of various other organs, including the brain, heart, circulatory system, muscles, immune system, musculoskeletal system, and reproductive organs. Thyroid hormones also affect metabolism and many other vital processes in the body. The size of the gland can vary depending on its condition. In a healthy individual, the thyroid has a normal volume of 4 to 16 cubic centimeters, producing an adequate amount of hormones. A deficiency of these hormones in childhood can lead to growth delays and developmental issues.

Causes of Thyroid Diseases

Thyroid diseases are numerous, but their causes can be categorized into:

  1. Diseases caused by increased hormone secretion (hyperfunction):
    • Excessive production of thyroid hormones.
  2. Diseases associated with hypothyroidism:
    • Insufficient hormone production (hypofunction).
  3. Diseases that alter the structure of the gland:
    • Nodules or inflammatory conditions.

Symptoms of Thyroid Diseases

  • Weight loss despite increased appetite.
